Understanding Wrinkles

To understand how BOTOX and Jeuveau work, it’s important to understand how wrinkles form. Some wrinkles, such as the folds around the mouth, are caused by age-related fat loss and a reduction in skin elasticity. Other wrinkles, including crow’s feet and glabellar lines, or “11s” between the eyebrows, are caused by repetitive motion. Years of smiling, furrowing our brows, and making other facial expressions can actually leave permanent grooves in the muscles that exacerbate these wrinkles, called “dynamic” wrinkles. These are the lines that these treatments target. Toxins can be used to prevent the formation of the wrinkles or to help correct the lines that have already formed.

How Injectables Work

BOTOX and Jeuveau are part of a class of drugs called neurotoxins. These products work by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the face that cause dynamic wrinkles for a subtly refreshed appearance that can improve your whole face. BOTOX has been in use for cosmetic and medical indications for decades; its safety and efficacy are well established. Jeuveau, also called #NEWTOX, was clinically developed exclusively for cosmetic use. BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments in the country, with millions of units injected each year. Both products are approved by the FDA. Neurotoxins are commonly used to treat the following areas:

  • Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
  • Frown lines across the forehead
  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes

Neurotoxins typically kick-in 5-7 days after injection and begin slowly wearing off in about 3 months. There is no downtime associated with toxin treatments.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are another non-surgical option for contouring the face and replacing volume loss. The natural aging process includes fat pad loss, collagen weakening and bone loss. All of this together can leave the face looking more hollow or having a sagging appearance. There are a large range of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers that are able to replace and restructure that loss.

  • JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Restylane® Silk: All of these popular wrinkle dermal fillers are based on non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA). Injected under the skin’s surface, they provide a support structure and attract moisture molecules to hydrate the skin. While these products vary in their uses, which include smoothing wrinkles and sculpting lips, all are safe and provide long-lasting results.
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA XC: Our patients over age 21 who want to add or replace facial volume in the entire cheek area have an excellent option in VOLUMA XC. This dermal filler contains lidocaine for increased comfort during treatments. Results may last up to 2 years.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC: Using the same active ingredient in other JUVÉDERM products, VOLBELLA adds volume, shape, and definition in a unique formulation that’s ideal for the lips. VOLBELLA can dramatically improve thin, wrinkled, or “deflated” lips and reduce the appearance of lines around the mouth for up to 1 year.*
  • Restylane® Lyft: This was the first dermal filler approved by the FDA to both augment and lift the cheeks and add volume to the nasolabial folds, often called “smile lines,” for patients who are at least 21. Lyft has also been approved for the restoration of the hands. Restylane Lyft is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that includes lidocaine to minimize discomfort during your treatment.

Dermal fillers are a simple in office procedure that show immediate effects. Depending on the area treated, downtime is present due to swelling and bruising that can occur. Dermal fillers are a longer lasting approach to aging. The length of effect vary with treatment area. Cost is based on the type and amount of dermal filler used to treat the area.

A double chin can be a pesky problem to have. For a non-surgical approach to the removal of the extra fat under the chin we now can offer KYBELLA.

KYBELLA injections target fat cells below the chin with a substance that occurs naturally in the body. That substance, called deoxycholic acid, helps the body dissolve and absorb dietary fats. When injected into the treatment area, it has the same effect on fat cells under the chin. Those cells are then removed from the body over time through its natural metabolic process.

Are there any side effects associated with KYBELLA?

The most common side effects after a KYBELLA treatment are swelling, bruising, and redness in the treatment area. The swelling may persist for more than a week in some cases, but it eventually resolves on its own. You may also notice some hardness around the injection sites, but that is also a temporary side effect.

How long will the results last?

Fat cells treated by KYBELLA injections are flushed from the body, meaning that they can’t accumulate or store fat. Results last indefinitely.

The natural aging process continues, of course, so there will still be changes to your appearance at the treatment area. And significant weight gain may also compromise the treatment outcome.
